This drill is exactly what I was looking for, small, relatively light, and has lots of power. The light onthe front is a great feature and the one handed chuck is great. It also uses my 18v XBR batteries as well...a nice feature if you are going to take it out somewhere.
2.) Great Little Powerhouse Drill

While I'm not a tradesman, I do a lot os DIY rojects and the old cordless was dying, so I baought this unit. It came with two batteries, which meant aI didn't have to buy the second right away. It's more versatile than the old one, especially because it's a ½-inch drill, so I can use the larger bits I couldn't on the old unit. The other advantage with this drill is the size: I can get at things in tighter quarters (like in shelf spaces) to drill and drive screws. Just couldn't do that with the bigger or corded drills.

4.) Solid, powerful drill

As a matter of full disclosure, I am using this drill as a DIY homeowner on minor projects. This drill was my upgrade into the world of pro-grade power tools from a cheapo 14.4V Black & Decker drill. I upgraded primarily because I was frustrated by having to drill pilot holes for lag screws all the time due to the lack of power. Furthermore, my former so-called variable speed drill only had two speeds, namely 400 or 800 rpm, nothing in between so I was constantly stripping screw heads. After doing some serious research into Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi, and Dewalt, I chose Dewalt. Why? Because of the power and construction of the tool. Dewalt uses its own measurement of torque (Unit Watts Out) whereas most other companies list max torque in ft-lbs. In my opinion, I best equate UWO to the amplifier rating in audio receivers. In receivers, many companies list their amplifier rating with only one channel driven. Rarely do companies list amplifier rating with all channels driven. UWO, to me, is Dewalt's real world sustained torque rating like all channels driven in an amplifier. So for this drill, although Dewalt lists it at 410 UWO, I think this probably equates to nearly peak torque of at least 450 ft lbs if not more. Also, I really liked the fact that Dewalt uses all-metal gears and it has solid magnet construction in its motor.
For whatever reason, although most companies have wholeheartedly embraced the Lion technology, Dewalt has chose to slowly move into it and, thus, still has a large portion of tools with NiCd batteries. I really debated about the whole NiCd v Lion thing. But really, for my purposes, I doubt I will be using the drill so much that I will use up 2 batteries. I really think having a back-up battery negates the charge time issue. Of course there's the weight issue, but again, for me, a difference in weigh of 6-8 oz is not a game breaker.
The closest drill to the DC720KA was the Hitachi DS18DSAL. Really solidly constructed drill with good power. Unfortunately, from a purely superficial standpoint, the Hitachi looks like a toy with the green molding. So I went with the Dewalt. In terms of real world performance, really happy so far. Was able to drill 2" long - 1/8" dia. screws into studs without a pilot, no problem. This sucker has power. Really like the LED light. The added heft of the NiCd gives the drill really good balance. Trigger felt right and was able to modulate speed very accurately (true variable speed!). I hope this review helps because other reviews just seem to spout off Dewalt sucks or "it's not lithium so it sucks" type comments.

I had never purchased a high-end drill like this, but my friend and I were working on converting a large closet into... well, lets say a "dark room". I didn't want to spend $200, but the friend had much more construction experience, so I bought it. We beat the heck out of this thing over the last year and it looks it, but it operates like it just came out of the box. That's what one would expect, right? It has one function and it should do that one thing very well for many years. Hopefully we get to the "many years", but so far, it's been great and worth every penny.

This is the best drill that I have ever owend. I have only used it a little bit since the purchase but bought this and am very happy with it. This is a very powerful drill. It even screwed right into 2x4 without pilot holes. Charge seems to hold for a long time. Make sure you charge as soon as you get it. I put the battery on the drill just to check for charge and it seemed to have one so I didn't charge right away. Well charge from factory was minimal so had to stop project to charge the the batteries, good thing is the battery charged in about an hour.

Love this drill. We made a video manual for this drill on HandBookLive.com (under Tools). The drill is very simple to use, but if you are more visual and don't want to to read instructions - this is a quick way to see what it does, and how to use it. In my opinion the video is more useful for woman like me, who want to feel more comfortable using a drill for the first time (I remember using a screwdriver forever because I just wasn't so sure what kind of damage I can do with an electric tool).
We bought it when we decided to build a loft and didn't want to use our cheap drill for such a big project. We use it all the time for quick fixes around the house. This drill is light and feels great in the hand. The speed control is very good too. And I never used to bother with speed controls on my drill before.
Have fun with it!

My son gave me my first 18-volt cordless drill (Black & Decker) four years ago. It was adequate for light use, but lacked power.
I upgraded to the DEWALT 18-Volt Compact Drill when I started my barn project. I have definitely not been disappointed. It has far more power than my B&D and the two speed feature is a big plus allowing a slower speed for driving screws and a higher speed for drilling metals. The 1 hour charge feature is a big plus.
I highly recommend this item.

The DeWalt DC720KA Heavy-Duty Cordless 18-Volt drill is a fantastic tool. Performance is exceptional, and the warranty is superior, although it is questionable if you will ever need it. Nothing, particularly hand tools, are indestructible. But for the homeowner up to light duty contractor projects, and the potential wear and tear or catastrophic event such an environment might involve, this tool is more than adequate (eg., dropped from a ladder installing gutter runs on a ranch... oops, still works and no case cracks!). The carrying/storage case is definitely on the flimsy side. But for the price point, warranty and performance, this tool is an outstanding value.

I'm a DYI'er and this drill fits the bill. I use it often and it has not let me down. I've driven 3 1/2" screws into pine 2x4's and it doesn't hesitate. It equally makes clean holes with the several sizes of drill bits that I've tried. This drill is just what the manufacturer claims; it operates well within its design capabilities. Its has plenty of torque and its easy to handle. I didn't think that I would like the LED light, but it really comes in handy. The weight is OK; although a smaller person may think it's a bit heavy. I'd recommend a compact screw gun for lighter applications. The battery charge duration is OK; I'd recommend a few extra batteries for full day of use. Overall, I'd say it's a good value for the price.

I'm a contractor and our company specializes in erecting condos so we are more than familiar with our power tools. When I first started my job I invested in this DeWalt drill since EVERYONE has one. After using it for a while I feel that it is not all that it is hopped up to be, the battery life sucks and I had to replace the battery after a couple months because it stopped holding its charge. After trying out others I would recommend Makita for the price and performance, also do stay away from Ryobi that brand of power tools is a joke (I would get it for my learning teen but not for professional use).

The battery needs to be more powerful for serious work but it is okay for hanging pictures or some real short jobs before having to recharge it again. Also when you tighten the drill bits you hear an audible clip when it's secure. My suggestion is that before you buy it, check it out. If you want to do light work around the house, get a cheaper brand. If you want a heavy duty sturdy cordless drill - you will be disappointed. I usually check the reviews before I buy a product and I was surprised to buy this dewalt drill only to find out that it's weak, with poor battery life and rather expensive for what it can do. From the very few runs with it, the drill pilot started getting worn out. What I did like about it was that it was light and easy to handle.
38.) Uses Ni-Cd batteries
Reviewed by: Mr.Telling Los Angeles, CA
Rating:
This review is intended more to fill in missing information than to offer my own experience with the drill. If I have any bias, it is that I happen to think the DeWalt brand tends to offer superior products. However, the description fails to mention (purposely, I think) that the batteries are of the nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) variety. This is a pretty important piece of information as NiMH and (more expensive) Li-Ion batteries typically offer much better performance than Ni-Cd. My own experience with Ni-Cd batteries has taught me to never get any product that uses them, but your results may vary.

I find it difficult to trust DeWalt because they refuse to disclose the torque of their drills or impact drivers in the in-lb standard of the industry. Even if you call DeWalt, they refuse to provide this information for any model. Every other quality manufacturer - Mikata, Hitachi, Milwaukee, Rigid, Ryobi, Hilte - provides this information for each of their models. I don't know what they are hiding unless their models are underpowered at each price point . Perhaps you are really buying a lower powered Black and Decker.
